Discovery was made at Starbucks in Lancaster, California, Saturday
Cellphone was propped up with paper towels under the sink and was recording video
A 5-year-old boy using a bathroom in a California Starbucks came upon a hidden cellphone with the camera rolling.
The child's mother said the boy made the unsettling discovery at arond 10.30am Thursday at a Starbucks branch located near Avenue K and 10th Street West in Lancaster.
The woman explained that her son used the single-occupancy restroom first and she went in after him.
Bugged: Someone had propped up a cellphone with paper towels beneath the sink inside the single-occupancy lavatory
When she noticed the 5-year-old staring at the sink in the lavatory with a perplexed look on his face, the mother asked him what was wrong.
'He said, "Mommy, why is there a phone under there?"' the unnamed Starbucks customer told the station KTLA. 'My skin kinda began to crawl.
When the women took a closer look, she saw a cellphone that had been propped up by paper towels, with the camera facing the toilet.
‘It had taken some work to get it to stand,' she guessed, 'so I could tell it had been placed there purposefully.'
The woman then pulled out her own cellphone and photographed the electronic device concealed beneath the sink.
Before leaving the coffee shop, the mother notified Starbucks employees of her find.
Sheriff's deputies who were summoned to the scene confirmed that the concealed device was recording video.
The outraged mother called the incident a ‘violation of privacy.’
There is no word at this time how long the phone had been recording video and where the footage was being sent.
A Starbucks spokesperson said in a statement that the Seattle-based company was ‘disturbed’ by the incident in Lancaster.
‘Our store partners took swift action as soon as they became aware of the incident by immediately alerting the Sheriff’s Department of the situation,’ the company representative concluded.
